What type of Identity Verification does Certn offer?
Certn uses two Identity Verification methods.
OneID
Our primary ID verification method is OneID. OneID is a comprehensive identity verification solution offered by Certn that utilizes biometric facial recognition technology. It provides a seamless and quick process to verify your identity by matching a selfie with your government-issued ID. Clients, such as HR and property managers, benefit from its ability to verify identities instantly, reducing delays and ensuring a smooth application process. In some cases, Certn’s clients may integrate OneID into their systems via Certn's API.
Non-Biometric Identity Verification
Our secondary ID verification method is a non-biometric solution that verifies your identity through Interac® verification service. This service is offered to applicants who have a Canadian address and serves as a seamless fallback when OneID cannot be completed.
Before you begin
Before you begin your identity verification, please ensure you have a valid ID on hand. Identification documents must be active (non-expired) and must include the following information:
- Picture
- Identification number
- Date of expiry
- First and last name
- Date of birth
Please note whether a piece of ID is acceptable is determined based on region and check specific requirements. For more information about whether your identity document is valid, contact the Certn Support team.
Acceptable forms of ID include:
- Driver’s license (issued by government authority at the federal or state/provincial level)
- Age of majority cards (issued by government authority at the federal or state/provincial level)
- Citizenship, Immigration or Permanent Residency cards
- Passport
In addition to having a valid ID on hand, ensure the following before beginning the OneID identity verification process:
- The device you are using has a functioning camera that can take high definition pictures. Please use a smartphone if possible as laptop cameras often generate low quality images by default.
- Your browser is not in Incognito mode.
- You are in a well lit area. Avoid shadows or environments with poor lighting.
Note: Identity verification checks cannot be completed on behalf of other applicants. Please ensure you are the intended applicant before submitting ID documents, and that no one else is shown in the frame of the selfie. If you need help completing the identity verification process, reach out to the Certn Support team for more information.
Completing the verification process
When you begin the Identity Verification process, you have two options:
- Proceed with biometric verification using our OneID solution.
- Opt out of biometric data processing.
Note: applicants may be prompted to complete the Non-Biometric Identity Verification option outlined below, if the OneID is unsuccessful.
To opt out of biometric ID, if the applicant has a Canadian address, select the alternative verification method while completing the application.
Non-Biometric Identity Verification will require you to login to your financial institution and consent to information sharing.
To complete Non-Biometric Identity Verification, the applicant must have the following:
- Bank account login information
Note: Certn does not store bank account information. The connection is used solely to verify applicant identity information.
Troubleshooting issues related to Identity Verification
Troubleshooting OneID.
The OneID session may be unsuccessful for several reasons, including those below:
- The image captured was blurry or information was cut off.
- The ID provided is expired.
- The applicant attempted to submit dark, blurry or incomplete images more than three times.
- There is a discrepancy between the applicant provided details and the information provided on the identification.

In some cases Certn may ask the applicant to submit a new identity document directly in the application. Please follow the instructions provided within the application for next steps.
Troubleshooting Non-Biometric Identity Verification
The Non-Biometric Identity Verification session may be unsuccessful for several reasons, including those below:
- The applicant does not have pop-ups enabled on their browser.
- The applicant did not provide proper 2FA information for their banking institution.
- The session timed out due to unstable internet connection.
- In some cases applicants have additional security features through their bank account preventing a third party from accessing. Applicants will need to contact their bank in this instance.
- The applicant's financial institution is currently facing disruptions or downtime with its online banking services.
