Who can order UK RTW checks
When you order a UK Right to Work check, there are three possible outcomes:
- Verified: The applicant’s right to work was successfully verified.
- Not Verified: Unable to verify applicant's right to work.
-
Cancelled: The UK Right to Work check was cancelled.
Results will include warnings and information in highlighted boxes.
Note: Clients will not be charged when an applicant selects that they do not hold the proper identity documentation.
Why was the UK RTW check automatically cancelled by Certn?
UK Right to Work checks depend on a successful identity verification being completed before they are run through Certn. Please see the Identity Verification dependencies Certn Help article for more information.
UK Right to Work checks are cancelled for one of the following reasons:
- Ineligible ID: The applicant indicated they do not hold the required identity documents required to run a UK Right to Work check.
- Applicant opts out: The applicant chooses to not complete the application or actively declines to provide the required consent to run the UK Right to Work check. The check result will be listed as Unable to complete.

Next steps
Once a UK Right to Work check has a check result of Verified, Unable to verify or Unable to Complete, the check is considered complete. Review the check results from the case’s case details page by selecting My tasks from the left navigation, and then selecting the related case from the list.
Verified Checks
If your applicant successfully completes the check, a report becomes available to you in CertnCentric. Then, outside of your CertnCentric account, you’ll need to finalise the check by simply confirming that the selfie and passport in the report you receive from us visibly matches the person who presents for work. You must do this before the employee starts work. You will also need to keep evidence of this check on file for the duration of the employment, in accordance with your legal obligations as an employer.
Once you’ve reviewed the results of the UK Right to Work check and any other checks in the case, you can record your decision concerning the case. See the Manage your cases Certn Help article for more information.
Not Verified Checks
If the check result is Not Verified, it means that we were unable to verify the applicant’s identity, and you’ll need to perform a manual Right to Work check. This involves meeting with your applicant in person to review their identity documents. The UK government has guidance on carrying out manual Right to Work checks on their website.
Reasons the check may result in Not Verified:
Certn was not able to verify the identity document due to document validity, image quality, fraud detection, or other related reasons. For more information on troubleshooting common issues, see the Identity Verification guide for applicants Certn Help article.
Unable to Complete Checks
